Women's Tennis Advances to WCC Tournament Title Match
April 25, 2014
SAN DIEGO - The top-seeded and #26-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team blanked Santa Clara today in the West Coast Conference Tournament semifinals, extending its win streak to 13in a row. The Waves have a chance to tie the program record for consecutive wins tomorrow in the finals versus #44 Saint Mary's.
Pepperdine now boasts a 17-4 record and has not lost a dual since the end of February. The Gaels, seeded third in the tournament, shut out No. 2 BYU this afternoon in the second semifinal, gaining retribution to a loss they had suffered against the Cougars during the regular season.
The Waves beat Saint Mary's during the regular season 4-0 in Malibu.
The battle for the doubles point between Pepperdine and Santa Clara was a close one, but Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) came through in the clutch to win in the tiebreaker and clinch the point for the Waves.
The #81-ranked duo went game-for-game with Delphine Rouvillois and Stephanie Skaras before owning the tiebreaker 7-3.
Prior to that, Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) got the Waves rolling with a decisive 8-3 triumph at No. 3. The Gaels responded with a narrow win at No. 1.
With the 1-0 lead, Pepperdine further separated itself in singles and quickly put away the dual 4-0.
Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy), often the first one off the court, continued that trend today and beat Nicolette Wolny 6-0, 6-3 to tally the Waves' second point of the day.
Cutura followed suit and polished off a straight-set triumph at No. 2 to extend the Pepperdine lead 3-0.
Chiang provided the clincher, and improved to 12-3 on the dual season with her 6-1, 6-3 victory today.
The Waves are one their longest win streak since 1999 when they won 14 in a row.
The WCC Tournament finals, held at the Barnes Tennis Center, are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. It will be Gualberto Escudero's final conference championship in his 37-year tenure as the Waves' head coach. He announced earlier this week that he would be stepping down at the end of this season, but will remain on staff as the associate head coach. Live scores will be available at the Championship Central.
