Waves Advance to WCC Championship Semifinals After 4-0 Win Over Loyola Marymount
April 21, 2011
SAN DIEGO – The #29 Pepperdine women’s tennis team got the 2011 West Coast Conference Championships started with a dominating 4-0 win over Loyola Marymount. The Waves improve to 12-7 and a perfect 4-0 versus league opponents heading into tomorrow’s semifinal match. Since the dual-match format was established in 1995, the Waves have won all 16 opening-round contests, and have put together an overall record of 47-2. The Lions challenged Pepperdine in doubles, but the Waves emerged victorious to gain the early advantage. Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Hidalgo Instituto) topped Reka Rohonyi and Elisaveta Pronkova 8-6 to improve their win streak to team-high six matches. Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Creekside Christian HS) made her dual-season debut in doubles with an 8-5 triumph in the No. 3 match alongside doubles partner Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista). Pepperdine dominated LMU in singles, beginning with Granillo’s 6-0, 6-0 win versus Miya Jin. Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) won her sixth-consecutive singles match with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph against Melissa Valenzuela. Issara tallied her 15th win of the dual season, downing Rohonyi, 6-1, 6-2. With the dual decided, the remaining contests were not completed. However, Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) was just two games shy of sealing the straight-set win versus Estelle La Porta. Colffer was deadlocked at six games apiece in the first set of the top match, while Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) was up a set when play was halted.
With the team win, the Waves add a point for Pepperdine in the PCH Cup standings, a year-long scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the two institutions. The Waves currently hold a 12-6 lead. The Waves clash with the winner of the Portland-Saint Mary’s match tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. Pepperdine last played the Pilots during the opening round of the 2010 WCC Championships and won 4-0. While the Broncos upset the Waves during the league’s title match last season, this year’s regular-season dual between the two squads resulted in a 4-3 victory for Pepperdine on March 27. #29 Pepperdine 4, Loyola Marymount University 0 Doubles competition Match Notes:
