Waves Defeat BYU, Clinch Share of WCC Regular-Season Title
April 19, 2013
PROVO, Utah – The #71 Pepperdine women’s tennis team concluded the regular-season today with a convincing 4-1 win over BYU to clinch a share of the West Coast Conference regular-season title. The Waves finish the year at 7-1 in league play and currently share the championship with #40 Saint Mary’s.
#58 Santa Clara could also claim a share of the title, and is 5-1 heading into matches vs. Portland and Gonzaga this weekend.
Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) and Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) got the Waves off and running with a dominant 8-1 triumph vs. Aubrey Paul and Desiree Tran on court three.
Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Michaela Capannolo (Hawthorn, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) sealed the deal, outlasting Morgan Anderson and Mackenna Maddox by a 9-7 tally to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
From the No. 3 spot in the lineup, Granillo rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory versus Anderson, while Guillermo pushed the Waves up 3-0 after topping Sheehan-Dizon in straight sets.
Although the Cougars chalked a win to avoid the sweep, Capannolo put Pepperdine out of reach with a 7-6, 6-2 win against Maddox.
Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School), who entered the match on a 15 match win streak, was up 7-6, 5-3 when the dual was decided and action suspended.
Pepperdine has two WCC regular-season championships to its name after winning the title outright during its inaugural run in 2012.
The Waves open the 2013 WCC Tournament next week at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. Depending on the outcome of the Bronco’s matches, Pepperdine will either open action on Thursday, April 25 as the No. 3 seed, or on Friday, April 26 as the No. 2 seed.
