MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team, back in the rankings at #71, topped local rival Loyola Marymount 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Center. With the victory, the Waves tallied 1.5 points in the PCH Cup Standings to overtake the lead.

The Wells Fargo PCH Cup is an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves. The two schools were tied prior to today’s tennis match, which was the last regular-season event scheduled between Pepperdine and LMU. Should the Waves and Lions not meet in the postseason, then the women’s tennis team’s win today would be the PCH Cup clinching victory.

The Waves, 9-11 overall and 6-1 in West Coast Conference action, won the doubles points with victories on courts one and two. Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) are now 3-0 when playing No. 1 together after today’s 8-6 triumph over April Bisharat and Claudia Razzeto.

Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Michaela Capannolo (Hawthorn, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) won by the same score from the No. 2 spot in the doubles lineup.

In singles, Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) put Pepperdine ahead 2-0 with a straight-set win over Reka Rohonyi.

Granillo was triumphant against Razzeto but LMU got on the board with Bisharat’s win from the top match.

The Waves continued to surge forward, however, and clinched the dual with Issara’s 7-5, 6-1 win against Parravi on court two. Issara has won 15 in a row now and is 18-2 overall this season. Should the senior continue her winning ways, she stands a chance to ink her name into the program’s single-season wins and single-season winning percentage categories. Twenty-one wins would put Issara in a multi-way tie for ninth place.

Capannolo tallied the Waves’ final point of the day with a close 7-6, 7-5 win against Mija Jin.

Pepperdine concludes the regular season this Friday, April 19 at BYU. Should the Waves win, they would finish the season in a tie for first place with Saint Mary’s and possibly Santa Clara as well pending the outcome of the Broncos’ two weekend matches.
