April 12, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – The #42-ranked Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team – the highest ranked team in the West Coast Conference – proved to be too much for Pepperdine today, posting a 4-1 decision to hand the Waves their first league loss of the season. Despite the loss, senior Khunpak Issara extended her singles win streak to 13.
Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) delivered Pepperdine’s sole singles win of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Catherine Isip. Issara is a team-best 16-2 in 2013 and has not lost since mid-February.
The Gaels, 11-8 overall and 6-1 in WCC action, struck first by winning two the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
SMC extended its lead after Jullien, the highest-ranked singles player in the league at #20, downed Guillermo in straight sets.
Although Issara put a point on the board to narrow the gap, 1-2, Saint Mary’s tallied wins from the No. 5 and No. 6 spots in the lineup to secure the dual victory.
The Waves, who dropped to 7-11 overall and 4-1 in the conference, have a quick turnaround and play at San Diego tomorrow, April 13, at 11 a.m. Live scores for the contest can be followed here.
