Waves Make Short Work of Gonzaga, Win Fourth Straight
April 5, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team extended its win streak to four matches after a convincing 7-0 triumph over the visiting Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Waves completely shut out the Bulldogs in doubles before cruising to six straight-set singles victories in just under two hours.
Pepperdine (6-10, 3-0 West Coast Conference) was unstoppable in doubles. Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), as well as Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Michaela Capannolo (Hawthorn, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College), both won 8-0 to earn the doubles point for the Waves.
The dominance carried over into singles, as evident by the six total shutout sets the Waves posted.
Both Granillo and Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) served up a “double bagel,” winning their respective matches 6-0, 6-0.
Issara came up just one game shy of the feat, downing Kyle Peek 6-1, 6-0. It was the senior’s 11th-consecutive win.
Michaela Capannolo (Hawthorn, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) put away a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Alexandra Tallas.
Guillermo and Moore also won in straight sets to lift Pepperdine to their second 7-0 shutout of the season.
The Waves play one final time on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center tomorrow, April 6 versus Portland. Just prior to the 11 a.m. match, seniors Issara, Panu and Abigail Phillips (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) will be recognized.
