Waves Fall to San Diego State on the Road, 4-3
March 9, 2011
SAN DIEGO – The #30 Pepperdine women’s tennis team had a rough day on the courts, losing 4-3 to San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center. The loss drops the Waves’ record to 6-3, while SDSU improves to 5-6.
The dual opened with an Aztec sweep of the doubles point. Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Dallas HS) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) played in the No. 1 slot for the first time this season, and faced #28-ranked Roxanne and Sierra Ellison. The unranked Wave pair challenged the sisters, but eventually lost 8-6.
Granillo evened the score with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Alicia Aguilar on court three, while Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) put Pepperdine up a point with a two-set win from the No. 2 singles position.
Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre) put the third point on the board for the Waves after dropping Sierra Ellison in three sets before San Diego State went on a late run to take control of the match.
After Emma Cioffi and Olivia Colman posted the first singles victories of the day for SDSU, all eyes were on the final match between Bhargava and Julie Trunk on court one. Trunk took the first set 6-3 before Bhargava, making her first appearance in the top match this season, answered with a 6-3 set win of her own. Trunk escaped the deciding frame with a 6-3 triumph to clinch the dual for the Aztecs.
Pepperdine looks to rebound on Sat., Mar. 12 for an 11:30 a.m. dual versus #16 USC on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
