#3 UCLA Edges Pepperdine 4-3
Feb. 28, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – A heroic effort by the Pepperdine women’s tennis team fell just short, and the Waves lost a narrow 4-3 decision to #3-ranked UCLA. Despite the loss all three players at the top of Pepperdine’s singles lineup won today, including Lorraine Guillermo’s straight-set victory over #2-ranked Robin Anderson.
The two teams were deadlocked from start to finish. Both the doubles point and the dual were not decided until the very last match was complete.
Although UCLA (9-1) got on the board first with an 8-1 doubles win on court three, the Waves fought fiercely on courts one and two.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) broke Chanelle Van Nguyen’s serve midway through the match to take a 4-3 lead. Although Van Nguyen, along with partner Anderson, would not be broken again, the Waves held their way to an 8-6 triumph.
The rubber match on court two was a back-and-forth affair, and the duo of Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Michaela Capannolo (Hawthorn, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) rebounded from a 3-4 deficit to go ahead 5-4. Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez, ranked #58 in doubles by the ITA, took the lead back at 7-6 but Pepperdine broke serve once again the knot the score at 7-all.
The comeback attempt would be halted there, however, and the Bruins would prevail 9-7 to take a one point lead into singles.
The early setback did nothing to deter the Waves, and Guillermo, Issara and Granillo all won their respective first sets in singles.
Granillo was the first to finish, deposing of #45 Kyle McPhillips, 6-2, 6-2. Issara soon followed and topped #68-ranked Montez 6-2, 6-1. For Issara, ranked #58 in singles, it was her team-best fifth triumph over a ranked opponent this season.
Dolehide earned the first singles win for the Bruins and defeated Abigail Phillips (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Oaks Christian) 6-2, 6-2 from the No. 6 spot in the lineup.
Van Nguyen put another point on the board for the visiting team, edging Capannolo 6-4, 6-2.
Guillermo evened the team score at 3-all after defeating Anderson 6-4, 6-2. It was just the second loss of the 2012-13 season for Anderson, who is still a team-best 20-2 this year.
Guillermo and Anderson met back in the fall, and the Bruin edged the Wave in three sets.
With the win, Guillermo improves to 11-5 overall as a sophomore.
After dropping the first set 6-1 to #82 Catherine Harrison, Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) took an early lead in the second frame. Unfortunately, Harrison was able to prevent going to a third set and won 7-5 to secure the match and the win for UCLA.
The Waves (0-8) return to the court on Friday, March 8, when they face San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center.
