Women's Tennis Defeated by Arizona State, 5-2
Feb. 23, 2013
TEMPE, Ariz. – Although the #51 Pepperdine women’s tennis team won the doubles point vs. #29 Arizona State, the Waves could not convert in singles and suffered a 5-2 loss.
In doubles, Pepperdine won two of the three matches to take a 1-0 advantage heading into singles. Although the team has come close on several occasions, it was the first time in 2013 the Waves have won the doubles point.
The Sun Devils struck first, winning from the No. 3 spot in the lineup but Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Michaela Capannolo (Hawthorn, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) responded with an 8-5 triumph vs. Joanna Smith and Ebony Panoho.
Arizona State regained the lead in singles, winning three matches before the Waves were able to put another point on the board. Issara downed Leighann Sahagun 7-5, 6-2 to improve to a team-best 5-2 this dual season.
Although Issara’s win put the score at 3-2 in favor of the Sun Devils, ASU won the final two matches for a final score of 5-2.
The Waves return home on Thursday, Feb. 28 to host crosstown rival UCLA. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and live scores can be followed here: http://www.pepperdinesports.com/livestats/w-tennis/xlive.htm
