MALIBU, Calif. – The #39 Pepperdine women’s tennis team won its second match in as many days with a 6-1 triumph over #25 Arizona State. The Waves improve to 4-1 on the season heading into next week Wednesday’s road match at #3 UCLA.

It was just the Sun Devils’ second loss of the year as they fall to 6-2.

All three matches were needed to decide the doubles point. Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) won their third straight from the No. 2 spot, quickly beating Joanna Smith and Leighann Sahagun 8-1.

The Sun Devils then won at No. 1 to equalize the contest. Despite jumping ahead by a break of serve early, 3-0, Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Christine Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) fell 8-4 to Desirae Krawczyk and Kassidy Jump.

Up 4-2 when the No. 1 match wrapped up, Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) were faced with a must-win situation from the No. 3 spot in the lineup. The pair continued to surge forward and clinched the point for Pepperdine with an 8-4 victory over Stephanie Vlad and Ebony Panoho.

Chiang gave the Waves the 2-0 advantage after putting away a straight-set decision on court five but Krawczyk put the Sun Devils on the board with a three-set triumph on court two.

It was all Pepperdine from there, and the Waves won the remaining four matches.

Capannolo and Granillo both extended their singles win streaks to four, while Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) grinded out a 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory vs. Gussie O’Sullivan to rebound from her loss yesterday.

After falling 6-2 in the first set to #73-ranked Vlad, #23 Guillermo got herself back on track with a 6-3 win in the second. The junior left little to chance in the 10-point deciding tiebreaker and won by a 10-1 tally to put the final team score at 6-1.

The Waves face their highest ranked opponent to date, #3 UCLA this Wednesday, Feb. 19 in Los Angeles. Pepperdine nearly upset the Bruins last season in Malibu, settling for a narrow 4-3 loss. The road swing continues with a trip Tennessee to face Vanderbilt (Feb. 23) and Memphis (Feb. 25).
