Feb. 10, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - The #33 Pepperdine women’s tennis team fell just short today against #65 UC Irvine, dropping a 4-3 decision to the regional rival. Despite the team loss, two Waves extended their win streaks in singles.
The Waves and Anteaters were very evenly matched in doubles, and two of the three matches were decided in the tiebreaker. UC Irvine put an 8-5 decision in the books on court three before Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) suffered a rare loss on court one. Franziska Goettsching and Kristina Smith fought with the Pepperdine pair, and with some late momentum, won 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
Although the doubles point was decided, the teams elected to finish the match on court two, which was already a few points into the tiebreaker. Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Michaela Capannolo (Hawthorn, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) came back from a 5-7 deficit to knot the match up 7-all. Tied at three in the tiebreaker, Granillo and Capannolo went on a 3-0 run to go up match point, 6-3. Although Marivick Mamiit and Sarah Stadfelt scored the next two points, Capannolo hit a winner while playing at the net to clinch the victory 7-5.
Guillermo got the Waves rolling, downing Smith 6-3, 6-1. The sophomore has now won three in a row, including yesterday’s straight-set triumph over Stanford’s Nichole Gibbs – the 2012 NCAA Singles Champion.
The Waves took a 2-1 lead after Issara defeated Mamiit 6-4, 6-2. With the win – her third straight -- Issara is 8-4 overall this season.
The Anteaters regained the advantage after posting wins from courts four and six, but Granillo knotted the score up at three after coming from behind to defeat Goettsching 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. Granillo has now won two of her last three.
Although Capannolo won the first set 6-2, she was unable to hold on for the victory and fell to Ali Facey 6-3, 6-3 in the subsequent frames.
Pepperdine opens a three-match road swing beginning next weekend with matches at Texas Christian (Feb. 16) and Baylor (Feb. 17). The Waves pay a visit to Arizona State (Feb. 23) before returning home on Feb. 28 to host crosstown rival UCLA.
