Cutura, Maddox Conclude Play at National Collegiate Tennis Classic
Jan. 18, 2014
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox of the Pepperdine women’s tennis team ended action today at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic with doubles and continued consolation matches. This was the Waves’ final tournament before the dual season opens later this month.
Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) opened the day in doubles against #22-ranked Stafania Hristov and Cristina Stancu of Texas A&M. The Aggie duo spent the preseason ranked #8 in the ITA doubles poll.
Despite never playing a single doubles match together prior to yesterday, Cutura and Maddox went toe-to-toe with the formidable opponent. In the end however, Hristov and Stancu got the victory and edged the Waves by a single break, 7-5.
Cutura then faced off with Hristov in singles. The match was equally as close, but this time the Wave walked away with narrow win, 6-4, 7-6.
Maddox suffered a close loss in her singles match, falling to Luisa Fernandez 6-3, 7-6.
Pepperdine opens the dual season at USC on Thursday, Jan. 30. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
