Women's Tennis Opens Play at NCTC

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox represented the Pepperdine women’s tennis team today at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, held at the Sunrise Country Club. Together, the pair won in doubles before both snagging a victory in singles action. It was Maddox’s first collegiate victories after joining the team at the beginning of the semester.
Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) opened the day in doubles, defeating Amelia Herring and Lindsey Kostas of Stanford 6-2.
They are slated to take on Texas A&M’s Cristina Stancu and Stefania Hristov, ranked eighth in the country, tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
In singles, Maddox fell in the first round but rebounded with a solid 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Janine Koleta in consolation.
Cutura also went 1-1 today in singles, topping Luisa Fernadez 6-2, 6-0 before narrowly falling to Saska Gavrilovska 7-5, 6-3.
Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) and Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) were originally entered to compete in this weekend’s tournament, but later withdrew.
The NCTC continues tomorrow and will conclude on Sunday. It is the Waves’ final tournament before opening dual action against USC at the end of the month.
