MALIBU, Calif. - The College Swimming Coaches Association of America announced the Scholar All-America Team Awards for the fall 2011 semester. Over 500 college and university teams, including the Pepperdine swimming and diving squad, were honored this year for their performance in the classroom.

The Team Scholar All-American award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented to teams achieving this standard in the fall semester and in the semester of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships (winter/spring).

The Waves, who recently finished eighth at the Pacific Coast Swim & Dive Conference Championship, boast a team GPA of 3.28. Other PCSC schools to be honored with the award include Division III Chapman University, with league-best GPA of 3.41, and Cal State East Bay, a Division II institution, with a 3.27 team GPA.

The Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team has a long standing tradition of academic success. Last season, senior Jessell Owens (Winnemucca, Nev./Lowry HS) was recognized as the Pepperdine Athletics Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Owens, a sports medicine major, graduated in the top-10 in her class in 2011 with a 3.96 GPA.

This past fall, 12 members of the team earned a 3.0 GPA or higher. Eight student-athletes surpassed the 3.5 mark.

The College Swimming Coaches Association is the oldest coaches’ organization in America.  In addition to Scholar All American Awards, the CSCAA recognizes All American Swimmers and Divers at the national championships every year.
