Waves Culminate Season at PCSC Championship

MALIBU. Calif. – All year long, the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team has been working hard in preparation for the season’s marquee event: the 2013 Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference Championships. For the second year in a row, the event will be held at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center and will run from Feb. 13-16.

Last season, the Waves placed eighth after scoring 537 points. Pepperdine looks to improve upon least year’s finish with a full roster of 25 swimmers and three divers that all have the potential to score valuable points at the meet.

The Waves’ best finish at the conference championship came in 1989 and again in 2008, when they placed second overall.

Thirteen schools, including Pepperdine, will be competing at the championships including Azusa Pacific, Biola, Cal State East Bay, Cal Baptist, Concordia Irvine, Fresno Pacific, Olivet Nazarene, Simon Fraser, Soka, Alaska Fairbanks, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz.

Wednesday’s schedule includes the prelims and finals of the 200 medley relay, 800 freestyle relay and 3-meter diving competition. The Pepperdine diving trio of Ellyn Strampel (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon HS), Klaire Korver (Redwood City, Calif./Pinewood School) and Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) are all expected to pick up points for the Waves.

Korver earned All-PCSC accolades for the first time last season after placing seventh in the 3-meter with a score of 212.75. The senior’s season-best score heading into the championships is 211.90, while Strampel boasts a season-best score of 213.80.

All three will conclude their portion of the conference championship on Thursday with the 1-meter. In addition to diving, swim events for day two include the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.

Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), Courtney VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS), Paige Weslaski (Racine, Wis./Case HS/St. Bonaventure) and Kelsey Maguire (New Rochelle, N.Y./Pelham Memorial HS) will represent the Waves in the 500 freestyle. Adkins has clocked the fastest time for Pepperdine this year in the event with a 5:16.11.

Eight Pepperdine swimmers are slated to race in the 200 IM including Jessica Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS), Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS), Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS), Erin Hayes (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch HS), Emma Fitzsimmons (Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe HS), Blair Kacynski (Superior, Colo./Monarch HS), Andrea Kacynski (Superior, Colo./Monarch HS) and Katie Giacobbe (Duluth, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian School).

With her season-best time of 2:12.98, Mosbaugh is seeded 21st.

Over 120 student-athletes are expected to contest for the 50 freestyle crown. Leading the way for the Waves in Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) and Ally Bernard (Porterville, Calif./Monache HS/Cuesta College), with top-30 seed times of 24.89 and 25.00, respectively.

A full day is on deck for Friday, with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay all being contested.

Mosbaugh, seeded 10th, along with Naasz, Elena Witham (Buena Vista, Colo./Houston County HS), Weslaski, Giacobbe and A. Kacynski should fare well in the 400 IM, while VanWinkle, Barreiro, Adkins, Pitts, B. Kacynski, Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla, Calif./Chowchilla Union HS) and Mae Corbin (El Paso, Texas/Loretto Academy) hope to score points in the 100 butterfly.

Races on the Saturday’s slate are the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and finally the 400 freestyle relay.

Other Waves who are seeded in the top-20 of their respective events including Mosbaugh (100, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly), Burris (100, 200 backstroke), VanWinkle (1650 freestyle) and Barreiro (200 butterfly).
