Pepperdine Gears Up for PCSC Championships Beginning Wednesday
Feb. 6, 2012
MALIBU. Calif. – Postseason competition has arrived for the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team, as the squad travels to La Mirada, Calif. to compete at the Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference Championships. The four-day event runs from February 8-11 at the Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center.
Last season, the Waves finished in sixth place with 508.5 points – a showing that exceeded expectations with just 10 swimmers and three divers competing. This season, Pepperdine will send 16 swimmers and four divers to compete against the 12 other teams expected to compete.
As always, the divers are expected to score well for the Waves. Seniors Leslie Wade (Atlanta, Ga./ The Lovett School) and Kristin Scribner (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) have both earned all-conference honors in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter during every season they attended the PCSC Championships.
In the final regular-season meet of 2012 at the PCSC Time Trials, both Wade and Scribner came less than a point shy of qualifying for the NCAA Zone Regionals in the 3-meter behind season-best scores of 264.25 and 264.95, respectively.
Earlier this season, Wade qualified for the NCAA Zone Regional in the 1-meter after winning the event at the Cal Poly Shootout with a personal-record score of 257.20.
The women’s 3-meter will be contested on Wednesday, while the 1-meter follows on Thursday.
Preliminaries for swimming events start on Wednesday morning, with the finals running in the afternoon. A similar schedule will run on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) enters as the Waves’ top performer in the 500 freestyle, with a season-best time of 5:15.40. That time currently sits at No. 13 on the conference’s season performance list. Last year, Adkins placed 20th with a time of 5:20.66 -- the best performance of her sophomore campaign.
Adkins will likely play a pivotal role in the Waves’ relay efforts. In 2011, Pepperdine’s various relay squads earned all-conference accolades in in the 200 freestyle, 200 and 400 medley relays.
Missing from last year’s conference championships was Madison Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS), who spent the spring semester studying abroad. Now back full time with the team, the senior is expected to make a big impact in the swim events for the Waves. As a sophomore, Krall picked up All-PCSC honors in the 1,650 freestyle, 400 IM, 500 freestyle and in several relays.
As a freshman, she placed second in the 1,650 freestyle to mark her highest finish at the league championships.
Admission charges to the PCSC Championships are $10 per session, or an all-session pass can be purchased for $50.
