MALIBU, Calif. – The final day of the Arena Classic was a memorable one for the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team. Not only did Jessica Mosbaugh set a new program record in the 200 breaststroke, but Emily Parks broke into the Waves’ record book for her performance in the 200 backstroke.

Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS), who first set the 200 breaststroke record last year as a freshman, lowered the record by over a second today. Now a sophomore, Mosbaugh reached the finals after placing 13th in the prelims with a time of 2:23.12.

In the finals, she won her heat to take the consolation championship crown in a record time of 2:19.37. She placed ninth overall.

Parks (San Antonio, Texas/Communications Arts HS), fresh off setting personal records in three different events yesterday, continued to impress on day three. The freshman swam another PR today in the 200 backstroke, clocking a 2:06.38 to advance to the finals. Not only was that time the sixth-fastest time ever in Pepperdine program history, it was just two seconds off the all-time record.

The freshman was even more spectacular in the finals, bettering her time to 2:05.62 to place 18th overall and fourth in the program annuls.

Although Courtney VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS) and Cailey Stuebner (Los Altos, Calif./Mountain View HS) missed out on the finals, both swam their fastest races of the season in the event. VanWinkle was credited with a time of 2:10.82, while Stuebner lowered her career-best time to 2:25.90.

Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) paced the Waves in the 100 freestyle, completing the race in a time of 54.06 – the fastest time by any Pepperdine swimmer this season.

Laura Graziano (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS), Kathrine Kuhlmann (Liberty, Mo./Liberty HS), Erin Himes (West Chester, Pa./Unionville HS) and Kelsey Maguire (New Rochelle, N.Y./Pelham Memorial HS) all lowered their season-best times in the event as well.

Naasz, Ally Bernard (Porterville, Calif./Monache HS/Cuesta College), Graziano and VanWinkle combined for the team’s best time in the 400 freestyle relay time of the season, posting a mark of 3:49.78.

Pepperdine concludes the semester at the Collegiate Winter Invite on Dec. 13-15 before picking up again in January.
