Swimmers Continue to Deliver Season-Best Times at Arena Classic
Nov. 16, 2012
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The women of the Pepperdine swim team continue to steadily improve as the season progresses, as evidence by the 22 new season-times set today at the Arena Classic.
All six of the Waves in the 100 breaststroke swam their fastest race of 2012, led by Jessica Mosbaugh’s (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) team-best time of 1:08.24. Emma Fitzsimmons (Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe HS) was the next Pepperdine swimmer to hit the wall, and did so with a time of 1:12.81.
Rounding out the Waves’ showing in the 100 breaststroke was Elena Witham (Buena Vista, Colo./Houston County HS) and Phyllis Reffo (Malibu, Calif./Santa Monica College) with season-best times of 1:22.67 and 1:27.55, respectively. While Witham’s mark was good enough for a new personal record, Reffo’s time came up just two-tenths shy of her all-time best.
Furthermore, Mosbaugh and Fitzsimmons set new personal records at the 50 yard distance in the event with opening splits of 32.02 and 33.79.
Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) was stellar in the 100 butterfly, clocking a personal-best time of 1:03.70 to pace Pepperdine. Erin Hayes (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch HS) came in just behind her, also in personal-record fashion, with a final time of 1:04.50.
Giacobbe’s 400 IM time of 5:22.99 included a personal-best 1:12.72 split in the 100 butterfly.
Hayes was the first Wave to hit the wall in the 100 backstroke, and stopped the clock at the 1:06.07 mark. Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) followed and came in at 1:10.15.
In the final event of the day, the 200 medley relay, Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS), Mosbaugh, Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) and Courtney VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS) turned in a collaborative time of 1:53.43. Barreiro shined with a season-best butterfly split of 26.91.
The third and final day of the Arena Classic is tomorrow, Nov. 17.
