Waves End Strong at Cal Poly Invitational

Pepperdine places second once again on day two of the Cal Poly Invitational.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - With 11 more top-five finishes, the Pepperdine women's swimming & diving team placed second once again at the Cal Poly Invitational. Jessie Mosbaugh paced the swimmers with two top-five individual finishes, while Klaire Korver and Ellyn Strampel led the divers with top-three showings in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) opened the day in the 400 medley relay, along with teammates Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS), Courtney VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS) and Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS). The foursome finished in third place after registering a time of 4:06.86.

Right behind them in fourth place was Elena Witham (Buena Vista, Colo./Houston County HS), Emma Fitzsimmons (Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe HS), Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) and Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS).

Mosbaugh earned a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke behind a time of 2:28.47, and a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:17.07.

Strampel (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon HS) opened the day on the 1-meter and scored 192.95 points for a runner-up title. Korver (Redwood City, Calif./Pinewood School) placed third behind Strampel with 186.75 points.

Korver and Strampel flip flopped in the 3-meter competition with Korver finishing in the runner-up spot this time. The senior diver scored 177.90 points, while the freshman was awarded 173.00 points for third place.

Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) took home seventh place in the 1-meter.

Burris lowered her season-best time in the 200 backstroke to 2:14.44 and placed fourth overall, followed by Witham in the six spot behind a time of 2:20.20

Ally Bernard (Porterville, Calif./Monache HS/Cuesta College) and Paige Weslaski (Racine, Wis./Case HS/St. Bonaventure) led Pepperdine in the 200 freestyle. Bernard hit the wall in sixth after stopping the clock at the 2:06.91 mark. Weslaski came in just behind her with a time of 2:08.55. Ertl rounded out the top-10 in the event with a performance of 2:10.40.

Adkins posted a season-best time in the 200 IM, placing seventh with a mark of 2:18.79.

The Waves were strong once again in the meet-closing 400 freestyle relay. Adkins, Naasz, Barreiro and VanWinkle finished in second place led by VanWinkle's anchor split of 54.40. Not only was the time a season-best for the freshman, but it currently stands as the best 100 free time of any Pepperdine swimmer this season.

For the second-straight day, the Waves placed second behind the hosting Mustangs. Cal Poly scored 786 points to place first, followed by Pepperdine with 414. Concordia-Irvine took third with 351 points and Azusa Pacific was the fourth-place team with 345 points.

On day one, the Waves scored 509 points and posted 16 top-five finishes.

Next up for Pepperdine is the Arena Classic in Long Beach, Calif. on Nov. 15-17.
