Waves Win Three Events at Malibu Invitational

MALIBU, Calif. – Competing in the newly renovated Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool for the first time, the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team won three of the five events on day one of the Malibu Invitational. Sophomore swimmer Jessica Mosbaugh won high point honors for the Waves, clocking two top-five finishes.
Day one began with diving. Ellyn Strampel (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon HS) opened her day with a first-place finish in the 3-meter. Teammate Sydney Newman (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge HS) finished right behind her in second place.
The 1,650 freestyle, often referred to as the “Malibu Mile,” was won by Emily Parks (San Antonio, Texas/Communications Arts HS). The freshman posted an impressive time of 18:13.86, over 15 seconds faster than her closest competitor.
Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) earned her second race win of the season after finishing the 400 IM in time of 4:38.26. Mosbaugh had previously won the 100 breaststroke at the PCSC Pentathlon.
Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) settled for runner up after lowering her PR time in the 400 IM to 4:54.56.
Mosbaugh set a new career-best in the 500 freestyle, clocking a 5:24.76 to place fifth. Kathrine Kuhlmann (Liberty, Mo./Liberty HS) and Laura Graziano (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS) also finished in the top-10 with times of 5:25.82 and 5:26.14, respectively.
The Malibu Invitational continues on Saturday with the sprint and middle distance events.
