Waves Place Third at PCSC Relays

LA MIRADA, Calif. – With eight top-five finishes, the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team placed third on the opening day of the 6th Annual PCSC Relays.
Klaire Korver (Redwood, City/Pinewood School) and Ellyn Strampel (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon HS) handily won the 1-meter diving competition. The pair collectively scored a 367.30 – more than 50 points ahead of their nearest competitor – to place first and score nine team points.
The duo continued their dominance in the 3-meter springboard event, winning with a hefty score of 343.50 for an additional nine points.
The backstroke relay team comprised of Courtney VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS), Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS) and Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) posted the swimmers’ highest finish of the day, placing third in the 300 backstroke relay. VanWinkle led off with a 100 backstroke time of 1:01.37, followed by Burris’ 1:00.44. Adkins took it home for the Waves, clocking a 1:01.08.
Both Adkins’ and Burris’ splits were less than a second shy of their career-best times.
The newcomers shined in the 200 freestyle relay, as Nicolette Barreiro, Elizabeth Pitts (Marietta, Ga./Marist School), Ally Bernard (Porterville, Calif./Monache HS/Cuesta College) and Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) placed fifth behind a time of 1:43.42 – a very solid mark for a season-opening meet. Naasz posted the fastest split with a time of 25.36.
The same lineup placed sixth in the 400 freestyle. All four delivered sub-59 second splits -- led by Naasz’ 54.93 – for a collective time of 3:46.09.
In the 800 freestyle relay, Naasz, Burris, VanWinkle and Barreiro clocked an 8:06.01 to finish in fourth place. VanWinkle broke the 2-minute barrier with a 200 yard split of 1:59.15.
In the first event of the day, the 300 butterfly relay, Adkins, Barreiro and Jessie Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) finished in a time of 3:03.33 for fourth place.
Pepperdine registered a fifth place time of 4:07.53 in the 400 medley relay. Burris swam the backstroke leg in a time of 1:02.32, followed by Mosbaugh’s 1:08.82 in the breaststroke. VanWinkle delivered a butterfly time of 59.85 before Naasz anchored the relay with a freestyle split of 56.24.
Emma Fitzsimmons (Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe HS), Erin Hayes (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch HS) and Mosbaugh finished fifth in the 300 breaststroke relay. The trio’s overall performance of 3:33.39 was highlighted by Mosbaugh’s split time of 1:08.28.
The Waves scored 54 points to place third behind Grand Canyon and Loyola Marymount, who were tied for first with 109 points apiece. The Waves finished ahead of Cal Baptist, Fresno Pacific, Azusa Pacific, Biola and Concordia.
Although the event continues tomorrow with the PCSC Pentathlon, Pepperdine opted to only compete during Friday’s relay events.
Next up for the Waves is the Malibu Invitational, held at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool on Oct. 26-27.
