Waves Place Eighth at PCSC Championship
Feb. 11, 2012
LA MIRADA, Calif. – After another day full of season and career-best times, the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team finished the 2012 Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference Championship in eighth place. Senior Madison Krall earned All-PCSC honors for the second-straight day to conclude her storied career as a Wave on a high note.
“This is probably the best meet we have ever had in terms of measurable improvement,” said head coach Nick Rodionoff. “Nearly every student-athlete swam the best performance of the season -- and in several cases her career -- in almost every race they competed in over the last four days.
“The team had its fair share of adversity to overcome, but they never gave up and they always gave 110-percent. Overall, I’m very pleased with the team and I could not be prouder of this fine group of athletes I have the privilege of coaching.”
In the prelims of the 200 butterfly, Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) swam a season-best time of 2:09.50 to enter the finals in fifth place. Although she was unable to better her time in the finals, the senior maintained her spot in the standings. By placing in the top-eight, Krall was recognized as an all-conference performer.
Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) swam a 2:15.09 in the 200 backstroke before shaving nearly five seconds off her time to place 13th overall (2:10.81).
The 100 freestyle race saw a plethora of season and career-best times reset, headlined by Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS), who placed 13th behind a personal-record time of 53.92.
Brooke Hawley (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) clocked a season-best time of 54.46 to take 21st, while Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla, Calif./Chowchilla Union HS) placed 24th with a time of 55.69. In the prelims, Barragan handed in a career-fast mark of 55.51.
Also making the finals in the 100 freestyle was Ashlie Benson (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS), who posted a 26th-place time of 54.79 and Jordan Shaner (Cameron Park, Calif./Ponderosa HS) who stopped the clock at the 56.72 mark. In the prelims, Shaner reset her career-best time with a swim of 56.52.
In the 200 breaststroke, Kelly Corso (Glendora, Calif./Glendora HS) improved her personal-record time to 2:32.54 in the finals to place in the top-20.
All four Waves racing in the 1650 freestyle swam their best times of the season, including career-best showings from Brooke Fugate (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) and Gina Vrablik (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy). Andrea Kacynski (Superior, Colo./Monarch HS) was the first to the wall for Pepperdine, clocking a 20:08.17, followed by followed by Ginger Jacobsen (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial HS) who lowered her season-best time to 20:17.70.
