Seniors Shine in Final Home Meet of 2011-12 Season
Jan. 28, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team competed in its final home event of the 2012 season today at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool with the PCSC Time Trials. Senior divers Leslie Wade and Kristin Scribner went one-two in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, while swimmer Madison Krall posted a trio of top-five finishes.
In the 1-meter competition, Wade (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) won the event with a score 248.80. Wade’s season-best score stands at 257.20, which she earned at the Cal Poly Shootout earlier this season to qualify for the NCAA Zone Regional.
Scribner (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) followed in second place with a score of 239.65.
Junior Klaire Korver (Redwood City, Calif./Pinewood School) broke into the 200-point range for the first time this season after scoring a 204.64 to finish in third place, while first-year diver and senior Amber Seba (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus HS) tallied a season-high 150.05 points to finish in sixth.
An exciting 3-meter competition brought out the best in Scribner and Wade. Through six dives, Scribner ended up ahead of Wade by just seven-tenths of a point with a first-place score of 264.95. It was Scribner’s first win of the season, after placing second on three occasions throughout the course of the year.
Wade touted a season-high score of 264.25.
Even more noteworthy is that both scores came up just shy of the NCAA qualifying mark of 265. Pepperdine has never had more than one diver qualify for postseason competition in a single season.
“Yes, it’s a little disappointing to fall just short of qualifying, but this way they are ending on a high note,” said head coach Nick Rodionoff. “We are expecting that it will carry them into a great performance at the conference championships, and who knows? They could end up qualifying there.”
Korver added to her list of season-best performances with a third-place score of 226.70.
Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) opened her day with a season-best performance in the 50 freestyle, clocking a 25.86 for fifth place.
Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS) hit the wall just ahead of Krall with a fourth-place time of 25.81 – also a season-best mark. Cailey Stuebner (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS) also clocked her fastest time of the season in the event with a 28.81.
Next, Krall raced in the 100 breaststroke where she took second place behind a season-best time of 1:11.02.
Jordan Shaner (Cameron Park, Calif./Ponderosa HS) raced to the wall in a time of 1:20.59, while Stuebner stopped the clock at the 1:27.63 mark. Phyllis Reffo (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS/Santa Monica College) shaved nearly seven seconds off of her previous PR with a time of 1:28.80, while Kelsey Maguire (New Rochelle, N.Y./Pelham Memorial HS) rounded out the Waves’ performances in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:30.37.
In her final race of the day, Krall swam in the 200 backstroke and handed in a time of 2:18.36 for third place.
Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) had a solid day, winning two races and coming in second in another. The junior opened the meet with a second-place showing in the 500 freestyle behind a time of 5:21.68 and followed that up with a 1:02.62 performance in the 100 backstroke for the win.
In the 100 freestyle, the Waves went 1-2-3, as Adkins won with a season-best time of 55.03. Burris followed with a time of 55.15, and Brooke Hawley (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) took third with a time of 55.25.
Ashlie Benson (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS) picked up a pair of fourth-place finishes today. She set a new season-best time in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 1:04.62 followed by another season best showing in the 100 backstroke (1:07.68).
The Waves now have a little over a week to put in their final preparations for the 2012 PCSC Championships. The event will be held in La Mirada, Calif. on Feb. 8-12.
