Season-Best Times Fall at PCSC Time Trials

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's swimming and diving team concluded the regular-season today at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial pool, hosting the PCSC Time Trials. The event was a dress rehearsal for the PCSC Championship, scheduled for Feb. 13-16.

Four student-athletes won six different events to highlight the day. Ally Bernard (Porterville, Calif./Monache HS/Cuesta College) won the 50 freestyle, Jessica Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) led the way in both the 100 breaststroke and the 200 butterfly, Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) won the 100 butterfly and Ellyn Strampel(Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon HS) placed first in both the 1 and 3-meter diving events.

The 500 freestyle opened the meet, which brought together the Waves, Azusa Pacific and Soka. Courtney VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS) touched the wall in second place behind a time of 5:23.57. Elena Witham (Buena Vista, Colo./Houston County HS) clocked a season-best time of 5:46.67 to take home sixth.

Bernard lowered her personal-best time in the 50 freestyle, winning the race in a time of 25.00. Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS), Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS) and Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) all successfully lowered their season-best flat times as well. Naasz hit the wall in a second-place time of 25.51, followed by Burris in fourth behind a swim of 25.61. Ertl clocked a 27.30 to place 12th.


 

 

Also performing strong in the 50 free was Elizabeth Pitts (Marietta, Ga./Marist School), Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla, Calif./Chowchilla Union HS) and Barreiro, who all finished in the top-10.

Following the 50 free, the swimmers took a break to allow the divers to take center stage. Strampel topped the podium with a score of 212.05 followed by Klaire Korver (Redwood City, Calif./Pinewood School) with a score of 105.10. Ertl finished in fourth behind a season-high point total of 159.65.

Barreiro, Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) and Naasz finished one-two-three in the 100 butterfly. Barreiro delivered a time of 1:00.96 followed by Adkin's 1:01.61 - a season-best for the senior. Naasz also swam her best 100 butterfly race of the season, clocking a 1:02.04.

Brooke Fugate (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) saw her season-best time (non-split) in the 200 freestyle get lowered to 2:20.24.

Mosbaugh won her first race of the day, winning by over four seconds in the 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:06.88 was nearly two seconds better than her previous season-best. Barragan also delivered her fastest time of the season with a 1:15.82.

Strampel emerged as the winner in the 3-meter diving competition. The freshman earned a score of 213.80 - her best of the season - to lead the field. Korver also scored her highest of the year in the 3-meter with a final tally of 211.90.

Witham led Pepperdine in the 200 backstroke, placing second overall with a time of 2:20.47. Emma Fitzsimmons (Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe HS) logged a top-five finish after clocking a 2:29.40.

VanWinkle, Bernard and Barreiro placed second through fourth in the 100 freestyle with times of 54.00 (season best), 54.22 (season best) and 55.94, respectively.

In the final event of the day, the 200 butterfly, Mosbaugh once again was the first swimmer to reach the wall. The freshman won in season-best fashion with a time of 2:10.61.

Pepperdine utilizes the next couple of weeks preparing for the season's culminating event, the PCSC Championship. The conference meet is scheduled for Feb. 13-16 at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif.
