Waves Wrap Action at USD Beach Cup

SAN DIEGO – Madison Krall lowered three season-best times and scored 12 points for the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team on the final day of the USD Beach Cup. The Waves placed fourth overall with 66 points.
Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS), who clocked a season-best time of 2:14.56 yesterday in the 200 IM, placed seventh in the 400 IM today behind a season-best time of 4:47.20.
Prior to the 400 IM, the senior anchored the 200 freestyle relay with her fastest 50 yard split of the season with a 26.45. Along with Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla, Calif./Chowchilla Union HS), Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) and Jordan Shaner (Cameron Park, Calif./Ponderosa HS), the team handed in a time of 1:46.98.
Krall shaved over 20 seconds off her season-best performance in the 1,650 freestyle, and was the fifth swimmer to reach the wall after stopping the clock at the 18:24.33 mark. Brooke Fugate (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) also swam her fastest 1,650 race of the season with a time of 21:39.87
Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS) logged a top-10 finish in the 100 backstroke, and delivered a time of 1:04.13 to place eighth. Ashlie Benson (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS), Ertl, Ginger Jacobsen (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial HS), Andrea Kacynski (Superior, Colo./Monarch HS), Cailey Stuebner (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS) and Fugate all posted sub 1:13 performances, including Fugate’s personal-record time of 1:12.69.
In the 100 freestyle, Brooke Hawley (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) was the top finisher for the Waves, and tied for 11th place with a time of 56.58. Burris finished just behind her in 14th with a season-best time of 57.30. Benson, Ertl and Barragan all reached the wall before the 1-minute mark to round out the top-20.
The 400 freestyle relay team comprised of Hawley, Barragan, Burris and Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), placed sixth with a collaborative time of 3:45.82 – just four-tenths of a second shy of Pepperdine’s best showing in the event this year.
Leslie Wade (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) placed fourth in the 1-meter diving competition after scoring a 198.65. Kristin Scribner (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) and Klaire Korver (Redwood City, Calif./Pinewood School) finished just behind her in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Scribner earned a score of 194.80, while Korver posted 170.15 points.
Loyola Marymount finished ahead of Pepperdine in third place to claim one point in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup Standings.
The Waves return to Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool next week Saturday, Jan. 28, when they host the PCSC Time Trials.
