MALIBU, Calif. - The first day of the Beach Cup is in the books for the Pepperdine women's swimming and diving team and the Waves took care of business, posting seven top-10 finishes against competitors from San Diego, Loyola Marymount and Fresno State.

"The girls had a great meet today overall, have been working hard and are exactly where we need them to be at this point in the season," said head coach Nick Rodionoff. "They weren't necessarily their fastest times, but we don't want them to be. The goal is to peak at the conference championship next month."

The 3-meter dive got the Beach Cup started, and Ellyn Strampel (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon HS) was the highest-placing Wave. The freshman posted a season-best score of 207.90 to place fifth overall. Senior Klaire Korver (Redwood City, Calif./Pinewood School) followed, also in season-best fashion, with a score of 190.35.

Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) competed in the 3-meter for the first time in 2012-13, and registered a mark of162.95 - good enough for eighth place.

After the intermission, the swim session opened with the 200 medley relay. The four-person team comprised of Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS), Jessica Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS), Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) and Courtney VanWinkle (Victor, N.Y./Victor Senior HS) clocked an eighth-place time of 1:52.96 - just over half of a second shy of their season-best mark of 1:52.26. Mosbaugh highlighted the race with a season-best relay split of 30.57 in the 50 breaststroke.

In the 500 freestyle, Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) paced Pepperdine with a time of 5:19.98, followed by VanWinkle's 5:26.15.

Mosbaugh earned a ninth-place finish in the 200 IM after handing in another season-best effort. Her time of 2:12.98 was nearly a second faster than her previous 2012-13 mark, and overall is the team's best time in the event this year.

Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) lowered her season-best time in the 200 IM as well, clocking a 2:15.33 to finish in 13th place. Burris rounded out Pepperdine's top-20 finishers in the 200 IM with a 17th place effort behind a time of 2:16.84.

In the 50 freestyle, Ally Bernard (Porterville, Calif./Monache HS/Cuesta College) was the first Wave to reach the wall. Her time of 25.58 was the junior's best flat time of her collegiate career.

Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla, Calif./Chowchilla Union HS) and Elizabeth Pitts (Marietta, Ga./Marist School) also lowered their season-best times in the event to 25.76 and 25.91, respectively.

In the final event of the afternoon, the 800 freestyle, VanWinkle, Barreiro, Naasz and Adkins delivered the Waves' fastest time of the 2012-13 season, and placed seventh with a mark of 8:04.13. Bernard, Ertl, Elena Witham (Buena Vista, Colo./Houston County HS), and Burris followed in ninth place after finishing the race in 8:33.13.
