Waves Enter AVCA National Championships as Top Seed
April 23, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - The six-team AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship tournament field is set, and the Pepperdine women's sand volleyball team headlines the list as the top seed. The Waves, undefeated in duals at 18-0, will be joined by Long Beach State, Florida State, USC, North Florida and Louisiana-Monroe.
The Waves won the inaugural team title in 2012, defeating the College of Charleston and Long Beach State twice in the four-team bracket. Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad Seaside Academy/Washington), made it a clean sweep for Pepperdine, winning the pairs championship as well.
Racich will have the opportunity to defend her individual title, this year alongside Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska). Pepperdine's No. 1 duo, Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS), will also compete in the pairs championship for the second-straight season. Frederick and Hill reached the semifinals of the pairs championship last season, and are 27-0 this year. Their most recent success came this past weekend at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge where the duo walked away as the gold bracket winners.
The team championship will begin on Friday, May 3 and the champion will be crowned on Saturday. A double elimination format will be used in the preliminary rounds, while the semifinal and title match will be single elimination.
CBS Sports Network will televise portions of the competition in three hour-long specials beginning on Tuesday, May 21. A complete telecast schedule is listed below.
The pairs championship will begin with the ten "Best of the Rest" duos (individual pairs from teams not selected to compete in the team championship) engaged in pool play on Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4. The top two finishers will be seeded into Sunday's 16-team single elimination bracket. Ten pairs from the team championship squads will advance automatically Sunday's championship bracket. The last two positions will be determined by a play in on Saturday afternoon. First round matches in the pairs championship will start at 8 a.m. CT on Sunday, May 5. The semifinals, scheduled to start at noon, and the championship match, slated for 2 p.m., will be covered by CBS Sports Network.
The Waves are a combined 14-0 versus the five other teams who will be competing for the national title. Pepperdine is 8-0 all-time versus the 49ers - the No. 2 seed - but four of those duals have only been decided by a score of 3-2. The Waves are 4-0 against USC, 1-0 versus North Florida and 1-0 against Florida State. Pepperdine has never met Louisiana-Monroe in dual play.
The Waves will face either the Trojans or Ospreys in the opening round on Friday. A win in that match would guarantee a spot in Saturday's semifinals, while a loss would send Pepperdine to the elimination round. Should the latter occur, the Waves would be faced with a win-or-go-home match to fight their way back into the final four.
