MALIBU, Calif. – Head coach Nina Matthies announced the addition of two transfers to the 2013 Pepperdine sand volleyball roster. Redondo Beach native Lara Dykstra joins the Waves after playing two seasons of indoor volleyball for Nebraska, while Lauren Sieckmann spent time with both the Cornhuskers and Wayne State College before enrolling at Pepperdine.

“I’m so excited to add Lara and Lauren to our sand volleyball program,” said Matthies. “They are both going to help us maintain the high level of play we need in order to successfully defend our national title,” said Matthies.

The Waves went an unblemished 14-0 in dual play in 2012, the inaugural season of sand volleyball at the collegiate level, and won the AVCA National Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. Pepperdine returns seven of the 11 student-athletes who saw action last year to the 2013 roster, including All-Americans Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS), Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS).

Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union/Nebraska), academically in her sophomore year, was a two-season starting libero for Nebraska. In 2011, she set the NU freshman record for digs in a single season with 399. As a sophomore, she picked up 371 digs as she helped lead the Huskers to the NCAA Regional Finals.

“Lara has a lot of great sand experience and is just a competitive, well-rounded player,” said Matthies of her latest acquisition. “All of her skills are fantastic and she’s going to play a positive role for the team.”

Dykstra’s sand resume includes a ninth-place showing at the FIVB Beach Youth World Championships in 2010 alongside Rebecca Strehlow. She was also one of four athletes to represent the U.S. at the 2008 FIVB World Championships in the Netherlands.

Her brother, Joey, is a professional beach volleyball player while all three of her sisters played indoor volleyball in college. Her youngest sister, Skylar, is committed to play UCLA next fall. The Bruins recently added sand volleyball to their ranks, meaning the sisters could face one another on the court in 2014 should Skylar play on the sand squad.

Although Sieckmann (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn South HS/Wayne State College) doesn’t boast the same amount sand experience as Dykstra, Matthies is still confident in her ability to make an immediate impact.

“Lauren’s got an exceptionally great attitude and was one of the fastest in the sand during the first week of practice,” complimented Matthies. “She’s a very well-rounded indoor player which translates into success on the beach.”

Sieckmann was recruited by Nebraska as a setter and joined the team for spring training in 2012, after graduating high school early. She later parted ways with the Huskers and transferred to Wayne State (Div. II), where she competed as an outside hitter for one season.

With the Wildcats, Sieckmann led the team with a 3.75 kills/set average and ranked fourth on the squad with 206 total kills despite only playing half of the season.

In high school, she guided Marian to the 2009 Class A State Championship title and was subsequently named both the Nebraska High School Gatorade Player of the Year and the National Sophomore of the Year by prepvolleyball.com. In 2010, she marched Marian back to the state championship match but the Crusaders settled on a runner-up finish.

Sieckmann finished her career at Elkhorn South in 2011.

The Waves open the season on the home courts at Zuma Beach on March 9 against Florida International.
