Pepperdine's 2013 Slate Revealed
Jan. 11, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine sand volleyball team, the defending 2012 AVCA National Champions, begins the road to the 2013 title on its home court at Zuma Beach the second week of March. The Waves compete in at least eight events leading up to the national championship, held once again in Gulf Shores Ala., on May 3-5.
Pepperdine, led by head coach Nina Matthies, could potentially add more dates and opponents to the schedule as more and more schools continue to add sand volleyball to their list of sponsored sports. Nebraska and UCLA were the latest to announce they will be adding sand volleyball for the 2013 season. Schools have until March 1 to declare.
The Waves open the season at home against Florida International on March 9. The Panthers will be competing in their first season of sand volleyball after announcing their intent to join in December of 2011.
Long Beach State, USC and Florida State, perhaps the Waves’ biggest rivals during the inaugural season last year, all appear on the 2013 schedule. Pepperdine faces the 49ers on the road on March 21 before playing LBSU at Zuma Beach, as well as the Bruins, on April 10.
A home-and-home series with the Trojans is also on the slate. The Waves play in USC’s newly built Merle Norman Stadium on March 26 before hosting the local rival on April 6.
Pepperdine competes in three tournaments, which will likely include both dual and pairs play, with the first being on March 14-16 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. Florida State, Grand Canyon, Cal State Bakersfield and Nebraska are all expected to be in attendance.
A trip to Florida is scheduled for March 29-31 for the FIU Tournament. Pepperdine will likely face Tulane, UAB, Georgia State and Florida Atlantic, in addition to the hosting Panthers.
The USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge is scheduled for April 20-21 at Hermosa Beach and is the final event of the regular season. Last year, the Waves went 4-0 in dual play at the annual tournament and won the pairs championship in the all-Pepperdine final.
The AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship concludes the season the first weekend of May. Gulf Shores, Ala. has officially been announced as the home of the championships through the 2015 season.
The Waves return 10 letter winners from last year’s squad, include AVCA All-Americans Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS), Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) and Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS).
Other key contributors returning from 2012 included Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS), Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS), Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) and Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS).
