Waves Top USC 4-1 in AVCA National Championship Quarterfinals

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The #1 Pepperdine sand volleyball team opened action at the 2013 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship with a 4-1 win over #4 USC. The Waves fell behind early but turned things around to punch their ticket into tomorrow’s semifinal match.
Pepperdine moved to 19-0 on the season. USC drops to 15-7 and is faced with an elimination match later today.
The Trojans’ Stevi Robinson, a 2012 Pepperdine graduate, and Kirby Burnham gave their team an early lead, topping Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) in straight sets on court one.
The dual appeared like it would go down to the wire, as the Waves won first sets on three of the remaining four courts.
Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) and Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) put up Pepperdine’s first point of the day with a convincing 21-11, 21-12 triumph versus Brooke Fournier and Kati Duddridge. Adelhelm was credited with four blocks at the net, while Racich put away 10 kills.
Team Kell(i)ey, comprised of Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS), put away a 21-16, 21-15 decision against Eve Ettinger and Bria Russ. Larsen, celebrating her birthday today, dished 16 kills and three blocks.
Although Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) ran away with the first set, 21-12, versus Cinnamon Sary and Katie Fuller, the Women of Troy avoided the sweep with a 21-19 win in the second.
Racich and Dykstra finished first, winning by a score of 15-12 to put the Waves out of reach 3-1.
Pepperdine’s No. 5 team emerged victorious as well, and Cook slammed home a kill to clinch the final frame 15-10 for a final team score of 4-1.
The Waves’ semifinal opponent has yet to be determined. The winner of an elimination match between North Florida and #3 Florida State will move on to the semifinals tomorrow vs. Pepperdine at 11 a.m. CT/9 a.m. PT
