Pepperdine Pairs Earn No. 1 and No. 2 Seeds at AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Both Pepperdine pairs competing at the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Pairs National Championships went undefeated in pool play to snag the top two seeds in Sunday’s single elimination tournament. Kim Hill and Lilla Frederick took the top seed, while Caitlin Racich and Summer Ross earned the No. 2 spot.

Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian  HS) and Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) emerged as the top team in their pool after defeating every opponent in straight sets.

The senior duo opened the day with a 21-15, 21-11 triumph against Stetson’s Kaley Melville and Julie Bassett, and followed that up with a dominating 21-11, 21-14 triumph versus Elyse Chubb and Lizzie Theesfeld of the College of Charleston.

In the final match of the day, Hill and Frederick overcame Long Beach State’s top pair of Tara Roenicke and Caitlin Ledoux, 21-16, 21-16.

In Pool B, Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad Seaside Academy) also went a perfect 3-0 on the day. The Waves' No. 1 pair topped teams from Florida Atlantic, Alabama-Birmingham and USC.

The first match of the day pitted Ross and Racich against Joanne Tate and Alessia Pizzocheri. The Waves downed the Owls 21-15, 21-15. They followed that up with a 21-8, 21-11 victory over Kirsten Gallagher and Heather Thomas of UAB. Ross and Racich scored a 21-18, 21-17 decision versus the Trojan’s Kirby Burnham and Kelly Irvin.

As the No. 1 seed, Hill and Frederick will face the No. 16 seed of Gallagher and Thomas in the opening round at 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 19. Racich and Ross will take on Chubb and Theesfeld.

The Seminoles won the other two pools. Jace Pardon and Jekaterina Stepanova took the third seed while Aurora Newgard and Brittany Tiegs claimed the fourth.

The top-seeded Waves enter the team championship tomorrow, April 28 against the College of Charleston at 11 a.m. (CT) The four-team championship also includes Florida State and Long Beach State.
