HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – The #1 Pepperdine women’s sand volleyball team put the finishing touches on another perfect regular season, beating #6 Hawaii, #5 UCLA, Santa Clara and #2 Long Beach State today to win the team title at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge. The Waves finish regular-season dual action with a perfect 18-0 record and improve to 32-0 all time.
Pepperdine opened the day with pool play and put its dominance on display with 5-0 shutout wins over the Rainbow Wahine, Bruins and Broncos.
The Waves met with the 49ers – winners of the second pool – in a championship match, and emerged with a 3-2 victory.
In the opening match of the day, Pepperdine won all five matches against Hawaii in straight sets. Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodland HS) and Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) were untouchable from the No. 5 spot in the lineup, downing Ku`ulei Zalopany and Olivia 21-15, 21-3.
In the second dual of the day, Pepperdine faced off with UCLA and once again emerged with a 5-0 victory. Everyone won in two sets, with the exception of Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) who outlasted Zoë Nightingale and Becca Strehlow, 18-21, 21-9, 15-11.
Pool play concluded with a 5-0 triumph over Santa Clara. Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) won their third of the day, topping Lex Williamson and Katy Schatzman 21-12, 21-9.
With a 3-0 record, the Waves advanced out of pool play and met with Long Beach State in the championship match.
Although the 49ers chalked wins from the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, Pepperdine won the top three contests to keep its record untainted.
