Waves Wrap Home Action with Wins Over Long Beach State and UCLA
April 10, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – In the final home duals of the season, the #1 Pepperdine women’s sand volleyball team defeated both #2 Long Beach State and #6 UCLA on a windy day at Zuma Beach. The Waves, now 14-0 in 2013, first downed the 49ers, 4-1, before posting a 5-0 decision against the Bruins.
Additionally, Long Beach State picked up a 4-1 victory versus the Bruins.
The opening match of the day pitted perhaps to two strongest teams in the emerging sport of sand volleyball. Last time the Waves and 49ers met, Long Beach State took a 2-0 lead before Pepperdine’s No.1-3 teams won to secure the dual 3-2.
Since that meeting on March 21, head coach Nina Matthies made a few tweaks to the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in her lineup, and the change was evident today.
Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) and Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) put the Waves on the board with a 21-11, 21-18 triumph over Jocelyn Neely and Lauren Minkel. It was the first loss of the season for the 49ers’ No. 4 tandem.
Adelhelm threw the roof on for five blocks, while Racich added six aces.
Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska), the No. 2 pair, as well as No. 3 team Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS), both won in straight sets to put Pepperdine out of reach at 3-0.
Racich and Dykstra nearly fell in the first set, down 13-18, but an 8-0 run with Racich serving turned the momentum around. Racich delivered two aces and four kills in the span.
In the top match, Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) went up against Tara Roenicke and Caitlin Ledoux – the 2012 AVCA pairs runner-up champions. After splitting the first two frames, the teams went to a deciding third set. Although LBSU led 11-10, Frederick tallied a kill, followed by back-to-back Hill blocks and a kill to take match point 14-11. Roenicke and Ledoux fought back to push the set into extra points, but Frederick put a ball away for the sideout 16-15. Hill then served a hard-hit ball that came back to the Waves’ side of the net on the overpass, and the Hill terminated the ball to clinch the victory 17-15.
Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson avoided the sweep for Long Beach State, outlasting Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodland HS) and Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) 18-21, 22-20, 15-7. Jackson and Johnson have been as consistent as it gets and have not lost in 2013.
After Long Beach State defeated UCLA 4-1, Pepperdine returned to the court to play the Bruins for the first time in program history. The Waves handily won 5-0, not dropping a single set across the five separate matches.
Frederick and Hill never trailed, and topped Kelly Reeves and Meg Norton 21-14, 21-10. The senior AVCA All-American duo is now a perfect 19-0 this season and 44-9 all-time.
Caitlin Racich and Dykstra opened their second match of the day on a 9-1 run and never looked back, posting a 21-8, 21-16 decision on court two.
“Team Kell(i)ey” exchanged the lead several times against Karsta Lowe and Bojana Todorova, but ultimately held on for the 21-18, 22-20 triumph. With a little assistance from the wind, Woolever tallied seven aces, while Larsen led the assault at the net with 11 kills and four blocks.
Taylor Racich also used the wind to her advantage and was credited with seven aces in her and Adelhelm’s 21-12, 21-13 win versus Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye.
Cook, pairing with Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) this time, made short work of Maddy Klineman and Megan Moenoa, winning by a score of 21-7, 21-12. Cook produced six aces and 15 kills, while Orozco added 10 digs.
Pepperdine concludes the regular season at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge on April 20-21 in Hermosa Beach. Teams scheduled to be in attendance include Long Beach State, USC, Hawaii, Loyola Marymount, UCLA, Santa Clara and CSU Bakersfield.
After that, the Waves head to Gulf Shores, Ala. on May 3-5 for the 2013 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship.
