April 5, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - After spending the opening weeks of the inaugural season of collegiate sand volleyball on the road, the Pepperdine women's sand volleyball team hosted its first-ever event with a dual against Long Beach State. Amidst the windy, but sunny conditions, the Waves defeated Long Beach State 3-2.
Pepperdine (9-0) and Long Beach State (2-3) entered the final match tied 2-2, but a strong effort from Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif/Mira Costa HS) and Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) lifted the Waves to the 3-2 team victory.
The No. 4 and No. 5 teams opened the day's action. Pepperdine's Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) fell behind 9-12 to Chelsea Cabrajac and Bre Mackie, but ran off eight-straight points to take the lead. Although the 49ers were able to side out, the Wave pair scored five more points in a row to take the opening frame 21-13.
The momentum carried over into set two, and the Waves won 21-6, to secure the match. Woolever tallied 16 kills and 19 digs, while Adelhelm added eight kills, a block and three service aces.
Long Beach State evened the score with a three set win from the No. 5 spot in the lineup. Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson edged Michaela Christiaansen (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge HS) and Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) 21-15, 15-21, 15-13. Despite the loss, Christiaansen handed in 20 kills and 22 digs. Cook tallied 15 kills earned on a .619 hitting percentage.
After a brief intermission, the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams all took to the court. Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad Seaside Academy) were absolutely dominant, disposing of Libby Fontanilla and Haleigh Hampton 21-7, 21-9.
Racich served up five aces to spark a 12-0 run to open set one, and finished the match with a season-best 11 aces. Ross chipped in 11 kills and 13 digs.
Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) battled with Tara Roenicke and Caitlin Ledoux point-for-point in the top match. In the first set, a Frederick ace gave Pepperdine a 13-12 lead, but the 49ers scored nine of the next 11 points to win the stanza. Roenicke closed the set with two kills and two service aces in the final four points.
Long Beach State went up 18-14 in the second frame to claim the early advantage. The Waves then scored five straight points thanks to two kills and two aces to go back in front 19-18. The Waves led 20-19 and served for set point, but the 49ers would win the match on a kill by Ledoux, a Pepperdine attack error and an LBSU service ace.
Tied at two, the outcome of the dual rested on Robinson and Larsen, who were up a set on Jocelyn Neely and Lauren Minkel when play ended in the No. 1 match. The 49ers made a late surge, but the Waves called a time out at 19-16 to regroup. Although Neely and Minkel were able to tally two more points, Pepperdine put the set away 21-18 to clinch the victory.
Robinson picked up 23 digs and 16 kills in the effort, while Larsen earned four aces, three blocks and 11 kills.
