March 30, 2013
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The #1 Pepperdine women’s sand volleyball team made a clean sweep of the FIU Surf and Turf Tournament, concluding action with 5-0 shutouts versus Georgia State and Tulane on Saturday. Yesterday the Waves defeated both Florida Atlantic and the hosting Panthers, 5-0, to improve to a perfect 10-0 on the season.
All five Pepperdine pairs won in straight sets in both duals today.
“I thought the team played really, really well this weekend,” commented head coach Nina Matthies. “The team understands that we have a target on our backs, and everyone is constantly striving to get better. We had a tough travel schedule but top to bottom, everyone played really well and I’m pleased with our performance at this tournament.”
Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS), the team’s No. 1 pair, won twice today to improve their season record to 14-0 in 2013. The duo, who also teamed together last year, are now a program-best 39-9 all-time.
“Kim and Lilla have a lot of chemistry and a lot of confidence in each other,” continued Matthies. “They’ve been training in the sand since fall and their experience really shows.”
Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) held down the No. 2 spot with two victories today. The tandem first downed Georgia State’s Jansen Button and Sara Olivovo 21-7, 21-18 before defeating Anna Wruck and Grace Weaver of Tulane 21-7, 21-18.
“Team Kell(i)ey” continued the winning trend as Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) picked up two convincing wins today. The duo, a perfect 12-0 on the year, allowed just 10.5 points per set across the two matches.
In the No. 4 spot, Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) and Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) won their fourth and fifth-consecutive matches with straight-set triumphs over Alexis Elmurr-Molly Smestad and Azarri Badawi-Jackie Wegner.
