Pepperdine Wins Twice at Sand in the City

ATLANTA - The #1 Pepperdine sand volleyball team won twice during the opening day of the Sand in the City tournament, hosted by Georgia State. The Waves opened the day with a 4-1 win over the #9-ranked Panthers before shutting out Louisiana Monroe by a 5-0 tally.
The Waves opened the tournament against Georgia State, undefeated at home this season prior to today's match.
Seniors Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) delivered the most dominant performance of the day's first dual, downing Jansen Button and Sara Olivova 21-18, 21-12.
Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) also won in straight sets at No. 1. After edging Moriah Bellissimo and Katie Madewell 21-18 in the first, the Waves cruised to a 21-13 triumph in the second.
Meanwhile at No. 5, Sophie Asprey (Southlake, Texas/Liberty Christian School/Tulane) and Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) held on to win 15-13 in the third for their first win as a pair.
The Panthers avoided the shutout via a win from the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
The Waves continued to dominate in their next dual, facing ULM. Pepperdine won four of the five matches in straight sets.
Cook and Messing were untouchable, winning by a score of 21-9, 21-13 while playing against Rachel Arnason and Alannah Cullum.
Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) rebounded soundly from their loss earlier in the day with a 21-14, 21-10 win over Blanca Ocana and Hope Pawlik.
Team Kell(i)ey won once again, improving to 7-1 in 2014, following a win at No. 2.
Cash teamed up with Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) at No. 5 and chalked a 21-14, 21-10 decision against Celine Flores and Kaitlyn Shearer.
Although Dykstra and Strehlow split sets against Zuzana Markova and Marcela Araya, the Waves' top team prevailed in the third, 15-12, to complete the sweep.
Pepperdine concludes the Sand in the City tournament tomorrow with the pairs championship.
