#1 Pepperdine Takes Down LMU, 4-1
March 20, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. - The #1 Pepperdine sand volleyball team extended its all-time home record to 10-0 with today's 4-1 triumph over neighboring rival Loyola Marymount. Even more impressive, the Waves have now won 58 of the 68 total matches contested at Zuma Beach.
Sophie Asprey (Southlake, Texas/Liberty Christian School/Tulane) and Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) made short work of their match against Anne Marie Taylor and Ashley Maxfelt, winning 21-13, 21-10. Adelhelm put down 12 kills while hitting .706, and Asprey picked up 21 digs in the effort.
Despite trailing for much of the third frame, and by four points as late as 8-12, Messing and Cook made one final push to win 16-14. Messing threw the roof on three times in the final frame, while Cook delivered six kills off of 11 errorless swings to control the tempo.
Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) rebounded from their loss vs. a Long Beach State pair on Tuesday with a straight-set triumph today against the Lions. The duo edged Kathleen Luft and Avery Bush 21-19 in the first before rolling to a 21-11 win in set two.
Newly paired Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) chalked the Waves' final point of the day, outlasting Rachelle Suaava and Taylor Akana in three sets.
LMU avoided the shutout via Betsi Metter and Litara Keil's three-set triumph at No. 1.
Racich rattled off 11 aces, while Cash finished the afternoon with six blocks en route to a 21-10, 21-16 win against Taylor Scioscia and Alyssa Walton
Pepperdine returns to action next week Tuesday, March 25 when the Waves make the return trip to #2 USC. The Waves defeated the Trojans 5-0 in Malibu back on March 8.
The week continues on March 28-29, when Pepperdine is Atlanta bound for the Sand in the City tournament hosted by Georgia State.
