LONG BEACH, Calif. - The #1 Pepperdine sand volleyball team needed all five matches to earn the win today vs. #3 Long Beach State and edged the 49ers, 3-2. Senior duo Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever won in straight sets from the No. 1 spot in the lineup to clinch the victory for the Waves.

With the win, Pepperdine keeps its perfect record intact and improves to 6-0 in 2014. Long Beach State drops to 2-3, with all three losses being decided by a score of 3-2.

With two sand courts outside of The Pyramid, the afternoon began with the No. 4 and No. 5 flights.

Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) and Sophie Asprey (Southlake, Texas/Liberty Christian School/Tulane) put the Waves on the board with a 21-8, 21-18 triumph over twin sisters Ciana Wagner and Morea Wagner.

At No. 4, Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) won the opening framing 21-9, but dropped the second to Jenelle Hudson and Alex Reid, 21-14.

Knudsen and Messing quickly reclaimed control of the match in the deciding set, and put away a 15-3 decision to chalk point #2 for Pepperdine.

The 49ers put a point on the board when Janisa Johnson and Tyler Jackson, undefeated in 2013, held off Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) 21-17, 21-16.

After Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) suffered a loss at No. 3, it was up to Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) to put away the victory for the Waves.

Going up against Long Beach State's No. 1 duo of Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Todorovic, Larsen and Woolever narrowly took the first set 21-19 to gain the opening edge.

Although Team Kell(i)ey fell behind 4-8 in the second frame, the seniors continued to push forward and eventually tipped the scales back in their favor.

Tied at 18-18, Larsen and Woolever produced a timely 3-1 run to secure the match 21-19 and the dual-clinching third point for Pepperdine.

Next up, Pepperdine hosts Loyola Marymount on Thursday, March 20. First serve at Zuma Beach is scheduled for 12 p.m. The Waves own a 9-0 all-time record when playing on the home sand. Even more impressive, Pepperdine's all-time individual match record at Zuma is 53-9.
