Sand Volleyball Wins Both Gold and Silver Pairs Championship Brackets at Olympic Training Center
March 16, 2013 CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's sand volleyball team won both the gold and silver pairs championship brackets during the final day of the USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge. Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill took the gold bracket title, while Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever were crowned the silver bracket champions. The gold bracket featured the No. 1 and No. 2 pairs from Florida State, Nebraska, Grand Canyon, CSU Bakersfield, in addition to the Waves, while the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 pairs made up the silver bracket. Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) improved to a perfect 8-0 on the season after winning three times today. The fifth-year senior veterans opened the afternoon with a close three-set triumph over the Cornhuskers' Kelsey Robinson and Alexa Strange. After dropping the first set 19-21, the Waves rebounded with 21-14, 17-15 wins in the subsequent frames. Pepperdine's other team in the gold bracket, Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska), lost in their first match of the day, but fought back into the main draw after downing Shayna Guitare and Mariah Alvidrez of CSU Bakersfield in straight sets. Back in the main draw, the Waves' No. 1 and No. 2 duos met in the semifinals where Frederick and Hill prevailed 21-18, 21-17 to advance to the title match.
The Waves continued their dominance and defeated Florida State's Jace Pardon and Marija Milosavljevic 21-16, 21-14. Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) couldn't be touched in the silver bracket. Pepperdine's No. 3 duo didn't drop a set in three matches on Saturday, and allowed on average just 13 points per set. After beating teams from Nebraska and Florida State, "Team Kelly" met with Seminole tandem Mallory Kiley and Sarah Wickstrom. Larsen and Woolever edged FSU 22-20 in the opening stanza before emerging victorious in set two, 21-16. Next up for Pepperdine is a dual with local rival Long Beach State on Thursday, March 21.
