CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The #1 Pepperdine women’s sand volleyball team continued action at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge today at the Olympic Training Center and opened the day with a convincing 5-0 triumph over Grand Canyon. In the pairs championship, four of the Waves’ five team advanced.
Despite a few changes to the lineup, all five Pepperdine (4-0) doubles teams won in straight sets.
Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodland HS) made her way into the dual lineup for the first time and partnered with Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) for a 21-11, 21-13 win against Kaitlynn Ausmus and Caelen Hiller.
Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS), who routinely has paired with Woolever so far in 2013, moved up to the No. 2 spot in the lineup along with Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska). The pair dispatched Sara Bowden and Shannon Dugan 21-13, 21-14.
Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) and Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) held down the top spot with a 21-12, 21-13 victory over Kristen Johannsen and Mackenzie Phelps.
The No. 4 duo of Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) and Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS), and well as Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) and Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS/Illinois) at No. 5, both won in straight sets. Adelhelm and Orozco were simply dominant, allowing just 15 total points in two sets.
In the pairs championship, the Waves went 3-1 with their only loss coming in a Pepperdine vs. Pepperdine match.
