MORAGA, Calif. Â Freshman Laura Cole’s two goals led Pepperdine soccer to its biggest conference win of the season Sunday as the Waves trounced Saint Mary’s 4-0.
"This was quite a result on the road against a good Saint Mary's team," Pepperdine head coach Tim Ward said. "From front to back, it was outstanding team performance. The girls deserved to have a game like this and we look forward to having another strong performance next week vs. San Francisco."
The victory improved Pepperdine’s record to 8-9-2 (3-3 WCC) with one game remaining on the schedule. Saint Mary’s fell back to .500 at 8-8-2 and 1-4-1 within the West Coast Conference.Cole
(Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS) scored a goal in each half. Junior Sophia Medina
/Los Alamitos HS) volleyed the ball forward to Cole for a one-timer in the 37th minute. Then, in the 54th minute, senior Amanda Rupp
/La Costa Canyon HS) delivered a pass which Cole banged in from 14 yards out.
Rupp’s assist marked her fourth point of the afternoon and raised her team-leading total to 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists. Earlier in the game, Rupp assisted on Ashley Copp’s (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) 40-yard cracker inside the near post, and beat goalkeeper Tara Larson in a one-vs.-one situation near the end of the 51st minute.
Senior Emily Wynne’s (El Cajon, Calif/University HS) assist to Rupp was the 20th of her career. She is second to Rupp on the team this season with five assists.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Kayla Stolte (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) pitched her fifth complete game shutout of 2008 thanks to a stifling defense that permitted just four shots.
Saint Mary’s four shots represented the second lowest total by a Pepperdine opponent this season. Iowa recorded only two in its 1-0 (OT) loss on Sept. 5 and Gonzaga posted four in a 2-0 loss on Oct. 17.
Pepperdine’s four-goal margin of victory was its second largest of the season (beat Idaho State 6-0) and matched last year’s effort against the Gaels, in which five different players contributed a goal in a 5-1 victory.
Pepperdine completes its 2008 campaign Saturday, Nov. 8 with a 1 p.m. home match vs. San Francisco. The Waves will recognize the seven members of their senior class prior to kick off.
