No. 17 Pepperdine Tops San Diego 2-0 on Friday Night
Oct. 28, 2005
Malibu, Calif. - The No. 17 Pepperdine women's soccer team shutout San Diego 2-0 on Friday evening at Torero Stadium in a West Coast Conference (WCC) match. With the win, the Waves improved to 2-2-2 in the WCC and 11-3-3 overall, while the Toreros fell to 1-5-0 in the WCC and 5-12-1 overall.
From the start of the match, the Waves directed the ball towards San Diego territory to set the pace of the game. On a turnover, senior forward Megan Woods chipped the ball over USD goalie Karen Cook to jump the Waves' lead 1-0 at the 16:37 mark. Pepperdine continued to pressure the Torero defense and at the 34:02 mark, senior Daniella Bosio scored from 20 yards out after Cook misplayed the ball in the net boosting the Waves' lead to 2-0. The goal was Bosio's first of the season after being out with an injury. Both goals were unassisted.
The Waves came out firing and took shot after shot as they controlled possession of the ball during most of the second half. Pepperdine had some impressive shots as junior forward Lindsey Redlin drove the ball towards the USD goal, but was stopped when it hit the crossbar, while Bosio's shot hit the post. By the end of the period the Waves totaled 10 shots in the second half.
Pepperdine held a 16-7 advantage in shots and held the Toreros to just one shot on goal. Redlin and Bosio led the team with five shots each. Senior goalkeeper Anna Picarelli registered her fifth shutout of the season, while Woods registered her fourth game-winning goal this season.
Head Coach Tim Ward thought his Waves played exceptional. "I'm very happy with how our team played tonight. San Diego pressured us a little in the first period, but we really stepped it up in the second half and the defense deserved the shutout. It's great to see our seniors playing well and making big plays for the team."
The Waves return home to face Cal State Northridge in a non-conference game on Sunday, October 30 at Tari Frahm Rokus Field kicking off at 1 p.m.
