No. 11 Pepperdine Comes From Behind to Tie Saint Mary's 2-2 on Sunday
Malibu, Calif. - The No. 11 Pepperdine women's soccer team came back from a 2-0 deficit and played Saint Mary's to a 2-2 draw in a West Coast Conference (WCC) match on Sunday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium. The Waves scored two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game to force the match into overtime.
With the tie, Pepperdine moved to 1-2-2 in the WCC and 10-3-3 overall, while the Gaels moved to 2-2-1 in the WCC and 8-6-2 overall.
Saint Mary's took the lead when Nikki Schrey knocked the ball in from the right side at the 20:32 mark and the Gaels held the 1-0 lead until the end of the first half.
Pepperdine's freshman goalkeeper Kayla Stolte took over in the second half for senior Anna Picarelli.
Although Saint Mary's took a 2-0 lead at the 60:15 mark, the Waves took control of the game and limited the Gaels' offensive plays. Pepperdine regrouped and attacked Saint Mary's defense and at the 80:46 mark, senior Megan Woods finally put Pepperdine on the board when she drove in the ball from 16 yards inside the left post.
Pepperdine was not done scoring as Woods played the ball to junior Lindsey Redlin, who was left with an open net after the Gaels' defense misjudged the ball and Redlin easily took advantage of the opportunity and scored the game-tying goal at the 88:35 mark. With less than two minutes left, the game was forced overtime.
The Waves dominated in overtime and out-shot Saint Mary's 5-2, but the game ultimately ended in a 2-2 draw.
Despite the 16-13 shot advantage for Saint Mary's, Pepperdine registered 11 shots on goal in the match, while the Gaels had just seven. Picarelli recorded four saves in the first half; while teammate Stolte registered one save in her 65 minutes of play.
The Waves conclude their three-match road trip when they face San Diego on Friday, October 28 with kick off set at 5:30 p.m. at Torero Stadium.
