Roxanne Barker Named WCC Player of the Week
Oct. 15, 2012
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - After collecting her fifth consecutive victory with a 2-1 victory against No. 18 Santa Clara, Pepperdine senior GK Roxanne Barker is the West Coast Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week. Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) played a key role in helping Pepperdine remain unbeaten in league play at 2-0-0, recording six saves on 14 shots, with five saves coming after the intermission against the Broncos.
Barker and the Waves are 6-0-0 at home, and have not dropped a regular season home match in their last 27 outings. Barker needs one victory to tie the program's career standard of 45 held by standout Anna Picarelli (2002-05).
"Roxy, for me, was the player of the game," Pepperdine head coach Tim Ward said after the match. "We needed her to make some great saves for us today and she did."
Barker is the second Wave to earn WCC Player of the Week honors in the last three weeks. Callie Payetta (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) earned honors after scoring the game winner at No. 5 Boston College (9/29), while Amanda LeCave (Windsor, Calif./Windsor HS) shared WCC honors after scoring a school record four goals against Indiana (9/2).
UP NEXT FOR THE WAVES: Pepperdine returns to WCC action when it hosts crosstown rival Loyola Marymount Friday, October 19. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. In addition to being part of the PCH Cup between the Waves and Lions, the contest will be a "Pink Match" to help increase cancer awareness and give students and fans the opportunity to become more involved in the fight against the disease.
