Megan Woods' Late Goal Lifts Waves To 1-0 Victory Over Columbia On Friday

Junior forward Megan Woods, playing in her first match of the season after missing the previous two contests with an injury, scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to lead No. 19 Pepperdine to a 1-0 victory over Columbia in the opener of the California Invitational at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley on Friday. The win improved the Waves to 3-0 on the year and marked the first time in the program's history that a Pepperdine team has opened a season with three straight victories. The contest marked the season opener for Columbia (0-1). The unassisted goal by Woods was the 15th of her career and tied her with Tasha Spangler (1999-02) for seventh place on the school's all-time goals list. It also increased her career points total to 40, placing her ninth in program history. Junior goalkeeper Anna Picarelli notched her third shutout of the season and increased her school-record total to 18. The Waves held a 17-4 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 advantage in shots-on goals. Pepperdine returns to action on Sunday when it faces host California at Edwards Stadium beginning at 4:30 p.m.
