Waves Crack NSCAA Top 25 at No. 17
Aug. 26, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's soccer team cracked the NSCAA Top 25 poll today after starting the season with a pair of wins last week to debut in the rankings at No. 17.
The Waves made the largest jump of any previously unranked team in the poll with their debut, and were one of just two teams, along with Wisconsin, to enter the rankings after not receiving votes last week.
Pepperdine started the season with wins over Cal Poly and Maryland at home this past weekend. The Waves downed Cal Poly, 2-1, in the team's season opener and then blanked Maryland, 1-0, later in the weekend. Cal Poly finished last year atop the Big West standings and Maryland was selected to finish third in the Big 10 this year.
Pepperdine is one of four ranked WCC teams in the poll. Portland and Santa Clara checked in just ahead of the Waves at No. 14 and 15 respectively, and BYU sits at No. 23.
The Waves climbed as high as No. 22 last year after receiving votes for much of the season. The last time Pepperdine was ranked higher than No. 17 in the poll was Oct. 16, 2012 (No. 15). The Waves' highest final season ranking was No. 5 in 2002.
Pepperdine hosts Florida Atlantic on Friday at 3 p.m. and then No. 9 North Carolina comes to town on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be seen live on WaveCasts.
