Soccer Recruit Earns ESPN All-American Honors
July 15, 2011
MALIBU, Calif. - Fall camp for the Pepperdine women's soccer team begins in just a few weeks and one of its recruits will be coming in with top honors, as forward Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) was recently named an ESPN RISE All-American third teamer.
Williams scored 117 goals in her four-year high school career, the most ever by either a boys' or girls' soccer player at Bullard High. Fifty of those goals came during her senior year, in which she was named the Fresno Bee's Player of the Year and helped the school to County/Metro Athletic Conference and Central Section Division I titles. Bullard reached the CIF Southern California Regional D-I final. Williams also had 42 assists in her four seasons.
"Lynn is probably one of the best athletes we've ever recruited," Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said. "We have high hopes for her. Realistically, she'll go through an adjustment period like most freshmen, but there's no doubt that she's a special talent. She's a wonderful young woman who is eager to learn new things. I think our environment will help her to become even a better player."
The Waves report on August 2 and have their first practice on August 3. The 2011 season begins on Friday, August 19 at California. Pepperdine's home opener is Sunday, August 21, against Arizona at 1 p.m.
Though Williams and nine other freshmen are joining the squad, Pepperdine brings back a veteran team with nine of 11 starters returning, as well as a total of 15 letterwinners. Returning players account for 25 of last season's 26 goals.
Pepperdine has made one change to its previously announced 2011 schedule. The Waves were scheduled to play Illinois on Friday, September 9, in Baton Rouge, La. That's now become part of the LSU Tournament, and Pepperdine will face the host Tigers on Sunday, September 11. That has led to the cancellation of what would have been a home game against CSU Bakersfield on September 12.
