MALIBU, Calif.- Pepperdine soccer senior Karissa Garcia was named one of 10 female finalists for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, as announced recently by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.

Garcia (Roseville, Calif./Oakmont HS) was selected to the list of 10 female finalists from an original pool of over 600 minority student-athletes. Finalists were required to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and to be active on their campuses or in their communities.

As an everyday starter for the Waves as a senior, Garcia netted her first three career goals and added three assists in 21 games played as a central midfielder. Garcia was an integral part of the Waves' run to the West Coast Conference title, their first since 2002. Garcia earned All-WCC honorable mention accolades.

Other women's soccer players on the list were Oklahoma State's Krista Lopez and Texas A&M's Beth West. Garcia is the only West Coast Conference representative on the list, male or female. The winners, one male and one female, will be profiled in the May 24 edition of Diverse.
