MALIBU, Calif. Â Pepperdine’s women’s soccer team took to the pitch for the first time in 2009 this past weekend in San Diego, where they lost 2-1 to USC before coming back to defeat UC Riverside by the same score.
The Waves received a game-tying goal from junior Sophia Medina (Downey, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) to knot the score at 1-1 against the Trojans, but gave up a late score in a goal mouth scramble. Freshmen Laura Cole (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS) and Melissa Trammell (Yakima, Wash./West Valley HS) and Boston College transfer Michelle Spacciapolli (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) all contributed on Medina’s goal.
Cole went on to score the game-winner in the Waves’ 2-1 triumph over the Highlanders after receiving an Emily Wynne (El Cajon, Calif./University HS) cross from the left side during the final five to seven minutes of the game.
Redshirt freshman Casey Bay (Cerritos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS), who missed all of last season with an injury, scored the first goal on a Medina feed and lofted it into the upper corner of the far post.
“The team displayed good character and there’s no doubt that everyone’s performances will continue to improve,” head coach Tim Ward said. “Spach (Michelle Spacciapolli), Lexi (Alexis Farler), Myriah (Stockman), Bo (Medina), Cole and (Kelly) Reilly all played well. Lexi was especially good on defense.”
The Waves return to action this Saturday at home, playing host to UC Irvine at 10 a.m. and Westmont at 1:30 p.m. UCI and Westmont are scheduled to face off at 11:45 a.m. Admission is free to all three games.
