Oct. 8, 2011 Final Stats
PROVO, Utah - No. 8 Pepperdine defeated BYU 1-0 on Saturday afternoon on the road. The lone goal came off the foot of freshman Lynn Williams in the second minute of play and held up through the rest of the game.
Junior goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) made five huge saves to preserve her sixth shutout of the season and second of the weekend.
The Waves wasted no time getting on the board, as the defense won the ball and advanced it up to Michelle Manning (Calabasas, Calif./Agoura HS), who moved it onto the Waves' attacking half with a pass to Laura Cole (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS). Cole took two touches to her right and spotted a streaking Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS), who outraced her defender, caught up to the ball on the right side of the 18-yard box and took a one-touch shot that sailed into the right side of the net to put the Waves up 1-0 in just the second minute of play. The goal is the fifth of Williams' season.
Playing in front of a crowd of 2,259, the Cougars were not going to give up on their home field. Although the Waves earned a corner kick opportunity in the ninth minute, the Cougars came back with a corner opportunity of their own in the 12th minute. In the 38th minute of the match, Barker made her lone save of the first half off a shot from the Cougars' Jaiden Thornock.
Going into halftime, the Waves held the 1-0 lead and led in the shots category with three to the Cougars' two. Both squads were even with one corner kick apiece.
The Cougars came out on the offensive in the second half, forcing Barker to make four saves on eight shots, but the Waves' defensive unit of Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS), Kristin DeGrandmont (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS), Kelsea Smith (Camarillo, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) and Myriah Stockman(Sandy, Utah/Brighton HS) held off the Cougars' attacking efforts.
The Waves took four shots of their own in the second half and had three corners to the Cougars' two.
Despite the Cougars efforts to tie the game, the Waves weathered the storm and Williams' goal in the second minute held up to give the Waves the 1-0 victory.
The Waves are now 2-0 in WCC play and remain undefeated with a record of 10-0-4.
The squad extends its school-record unbeaten streak to 15, stemming back to the end of the 2010 season.
The Waves will return home to Southern California but will remain on the road as they travel to rival Loyola Marymount for a PCH Cup showdown Sunday, October 16 at 1 p.m. PT.
